Teen's Back Pain Reveals Rare Cancer Nightmare
13 Jun
Summary
- A rare aggressive cancer was discovered after misinterpreting back pain.
- Callum Lodge, 16, was diagnosed with stage 4 sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma.
- The family is fundraising for specialist treatment and future care.

Gemma Lodge initially believed her son Callum's severe back and hip pain, which began in April 2025, was related to a July 2024 van accident that caused him knee and ligament injuries. However, persistent pain that left the 16-year-old bedbound during summer vacation prompted Gemma to seek a second opinion. A physiotherapist's urgent recommendation led to an MRI in August 2025, revealing a nearly 3-inch mass on Callum's spine.
In January 2026, Callum was diagnosed with stage 4 sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF), an exceptionally rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcoma. The cancer had spread to his left kidney, requiring surgery to remove it. He is currently undergoing immunotherapy treatment, though options remain uncertain due to the rarity of his condition. Despite his diagnosis, Callum is reportedly maintaining a positive outlook, continuing his school exams and social activities.
The Lodge family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Callum's medical journey. The funds will be used for specialist treatments and future care not covered by the government, as well as enabling Callum to enjoy life. His resilience and humor continue to inspire those around him as he navigates this challenging period.
