Misdiagnosed Pregnancy: Teen Falsely Told She Was Expecting

A mother is sharing a harrowing medical misdiagnosis incident involving her 13-year-old daughter that occurred several years ago. The ordeal began when the teen experienced abdominal pain, leading her mother to take her to the emergency room, suspecting appendicitis. Initial tests, including blood work and a urine sample, all returned negative for pregnancy. However, an ultrasound technician and a physician's assistant later informed the mother and daughter that the teen was approximately six weeks pregnant.

Despite the negative test results, the medical staff attributed the supposed pregnancy to an observation on the ultrasound. The teen, who was not sexually active, was deeply distressed and frightened by the assertion, especially when staff insisted on the diagnosis. The mother expressed anger and disappointment at the refusal to consider other potential causes for the ultrasound finding.

Following the emergency room visit, the family sought a second opinion from an OB-GYN. This specialist reviewed the hospital records and conducted a new ultrasound, ultimately confirming that the teen was not pregnant. The OB-GYN explained that the structure identified on the initial scan was likely retained blood from the teen's menstrual cycle.

The experience led the mother to file a grievance with the hospital, resulting in an apology. She now emphasizes the importance of parents trusting their instincts and advocating for their children within the healthcare system, wanting to prevent similar traumatic experiences for other young girls.
