16 May
Summary
- A high school student survived cardiac arrest during band class.
- School staff performed CPR and used an AED to save the student's life.
- The student is recovering remarkably and values time more.

A West Park High School student, Mark Moon, is recovering after a sudden cardiac arrest during band class. The incident occurred in April, and Mark has no memory of the event. School staff immediately administered CPR and utilized an automated external defibrillator (AED) before paramedics arrived.
Mark was taken to Kaiser Permanente Roseville and has shown a remarkable recovery. Doctors note that while sudden cardiac arrest in children is rare, having trained professionals and immediate access to AEDs in schools significantly increases survival rates. The American Heart Association estimates 7,000 children suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually.
While the cause of Mark's cardiac arrest remains unknown, experts emphasize the importance of CPR training and AED accessibility. Mark, now back on campus, has a new appreciation for time. Eight staff members were recently honored by the Roseville Joint Union High School District for their life-saving actions.
