Teen Paralyzed After Flu Attack
25 May
Summary
- Teenager experienced paralysis after severe flu symptoms.
- Doctors suspect a spinal stroke caused by the flu.
- Intensive physiotherapy shows signs of recovery.

A teenage girl, Lexi Brown, aged 14, suffered a devastating loss of mobility after contracting a severe flu infection. Initially experiencing flu-like symptoms in December of the previous year, Lexi's condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to her screaming in pain and requiring emergency medical intervention. She was eventually resuscitated twice and placed in a medically induced coma.
Physicians at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge suspect that Lexi experienced a spinal stroke, a rare complication linked to the flu virus. Upon waking, she was paralyzed from the neck down, unable to walk, talk, or breathe without assistance. Her mother described the harrowing experience of receiving a call from her daughter in severe distress.
Lexi's recovery journey is ongoing, supported by intensive physiotherapy. She has shown encouraging signs, including the ability to breathe unassisted during the day and a return of some limb movement, though not yet functional. A significant milestone was achieved when she managed to sit up independently for approximately 30 seconds, a feat previously deemed unlikely.
This challenging period has necessitated significant adjustments for Lexi's family. Her mother may need to leave her job to provide care, and the family is exploring housing modifications to accommodate Lexi's needs. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated, raising over £8,200 to support her recovery and family expenses.
