In September 2025, 19-year-old Xavier LeMay has returned to Phoenix Recovery Academy in Frederick, Maryland as the school's first peer recovery specialist. LeMay graduated from the academy in May 2024 at the age of 17 after overcoming his own substance abuse issues.
After completing the requirements for certification, LeMay became the youngest peer recovery specialist in the state of Maryland at 18 years old. In his new role, LeMay can continue to relate to the students and their emotions, drawing on his own experiences in recovery.
LeMay's position is crucial in providing a "shared experience" and therapeutic value for the current students at Phoenix Recovery Academy. As a peer specialist, he helps keep the students accountable and serves as a relatable role model, showing them that it's possible to be both sober and have fun. The school's executive director hopes LeMay's story and message can give hope to the students currently enrolled.
Each day in his new role is different for LeMay, from meeting with students one-on-one to overseeing classes. He is also aiming to connect with local public schools to share his work and inspire others facing similar challenges.
