Teen's Organ Donation Saved Five Lives
6 Aug
Summary
- A 14-year-old's organs saved five people after his death.
- Organ donation was possible due to a prior family discussion.
- Consenting to organ donation dropped significantly recently.
The organs of 14-year-old Aaron Anderson, from Consett, were used to save five lives following his death on Boxing Day. His parents, Donna and Craig, shared that this outcome was only possible because they had previously discussed organ donation with their son. Aaron had expressed his support for donation to his parents a fortnight before the tragic incident where a vehicle overturned on a farm.
The NHS is encouraging more families to discuss organ donation preferences, aiming to increase consent rates. In the north-east England and Yorkshire region, 63 individuals died last year while awaiting a transplant. Consent rates for organ donation have seen a concerning decrease, dropping from 69% in the 2020-21 period to 57% in 2025-26.
