- Adolescent obesity is a growing crisis worldwide.
- GLP-1 mimics hormones to reduce appetite and aid weight loss.

An 18-year-old patient in Ahmedabad has achieved a significant weight loss of 35kg, transforming from 120kg to 85kg with the help of endocrinologist Dr. Vivek Arya. Initially advised on diet and exercise, the teen's family sought medical intervention when these methods proved insufficient.
The patient was placed on GLP-1 treatment, which facilitated a monthly weight loss of approximately 3kg. He also participated in a counseling and lifestyle modification program. This intervention not only reduced his weight but also boosted his confidence and activity levels, underscoring the growing challenge of adolescent obesity.
World Obesity Day, observed annually on March 3, this year focused on "8 billion reasons to act on obesity," emphasizing personal journeys. Experts confirm a rising trend in adolescents requiring medical care for obesity. Factors such as sedentary lifestyles, increased screen time, and processed food consumption are contributing to this crisis.
GLP-1, a hormone that regulates blood sugar and satiety, is now mimicked by medications to reduce appetite. Approved for pediatric use under specific conditions, these drugs are prescribed to control obesity in individuals as young as 14 or 15. India faces a significant health challenge with rising obesity rates, as noted in the Economic Survey 2025-26.
