Tampon Test for Early Ovarian Cancer?
21 Feb
Summary
- Specialist tampons may detect ovarian cancer early.
- Early diagnosis significantly increases survival chances.
- Study uses vaginal fluid samples for biomarker detection.

A groundbreaking study is investigating the potential of a specialist medical tampon to revolutionize the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Researchers in Southampton are leading a clinical trial to assess if these tampons can effectively collect vaginal fluid samples for analysis. This method aims to detect early biological markers, such as microRNAs, that indicate the presence of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer affects approximately 7,500 women annually in the UK. Catching the disease in its earliest stages offers a 95% survival rate, yet only about one-third of cases are diagnosed early. This new diagnostic tampon, which can be worn at home for just 20 minutes, offers a promising, less invasive alternative to current screening methods. The research could lead to a significant improvement in detecting ovarian cancer, potentially saving many lives.
