Tamil Nadu Declares War on Salt: Health Mission Launched

Tamil Nadu has initiated a significant public health campaign aimed at reducing salt consumption across the state. This mission addresses the widespread issue of high salt intake, which is strongly linked to hypertension, a major concern in Tamil Nadu where adult prevalence stands at 33.9%. This figure is notably higher than the national average of 28.5%.

The comprehensive plan involves several key strategies. For the first time, a statewide survey will scientifically measure salt consumption levels using urine samples. Additionally, salt content will be progressively reduced in all government-run kitchens, including those in the Nutritious Meal Programme, ICDS centres, government hospitals, and hostels. The feasibility of introducing low-sodium salt substitutes will also be explored.

The government will also implement a broad awareness campaign focused on educating the public about reading food labels, tasting food before adding salt, and utilizing natural flavour enhancers. Efforts to control hypertension will be bolstered through the community health outreach program 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' and other public health institutions, ensuring systematic counseling and medication for diagnosed individuals.

Experts and health organizations have welcomed this initiative, highlighting the critical role of salt reduction in preventing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. They emphasize that reducing salt intake is an achievable habit change with substantial long-term benefits for public health. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for other states in India.
