Tamil Nadu Eyes Policy for Menopausal Women
18 Jul
Summary
- Tamil Nadu considering a dedicated public health policy for menopausal women.
- Existing programs offer insufficient attention to menopausal health concerns.
- Rural women often suffer in silence from menopausal symptoms.

Tamil Nadu is exploring the creation of a specific public health policy to address the needs of menopausal women. Health Minister K G Arunraj stated that current health programs do not adequately cater to the concerns women face during menopause. He emphasized that women constitute half the population, with a substantial period of their lives spent post-menopause, yet hormonal changes and their symptoms are often misunderstood and untreated.
The minister acknowledged a lack of focused national or state programs for menopausal health, contrasting it with existing initiatives for other diseases. He noted that symptoms can begin years before menopause, but awareness is low, and social stigma discourages women from seeking medical advice. This oversight particularly affects rural women, who may suffer in silence, with their complaints sometimes dismissed as minor pains.
Arunraj confirmed that the health department will soon discuss the proposal with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. He assured that necessary arrangements will be made to implement multidisciplinary treatment options and ensure better care for aging women experiencing menopausal health issues.
