In 17 years, Tamil Nadu has dramatically increased deceased donor organ donations from seven to 266 annually. This significant growth stems from a positive shift in public perception, cultivated by consistent awareness campaigns, measures to build trust, and enhancements in the state's transplant infrastructure. In 2025, 266 donors contributed 1,476 organs and tissues.
Early challenges included a poor understanding of brain death among professionals. However, public receptiveness and government support, including issuing multiple government orders, were crucial. Initiatives like state honors for deceased donors, first implemented in September 2023, have been particularly effective. Over 800 such honors have been accorded since October 2023, reinforcing the impact of successful donation stories.
While progress is substantial, experts advocate for continued efforts. Reducing road accidents is vital, and exploring Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) is recommended to increase the donor pool. Establishing green corridors in hospitals and appointing nodal officers are also suggested to optimize organ donation processes and prevent missed opportunities.
