Tamil Nadu Cracks Down on Unregulated Cosmetic Clinics
7 Mar
Summary
- Aesthetics, cosmetology, hair transplant clinics need mandatory registration.
- Procedures to be performed only by qualified dermatologists or plastic surgeons.
- New rules aim to curb quackery and botched procedures in clinics.

The Tamil Nadu government has issued a new order requiring mandatory registration for all aesthetics, cosmetology, and hair transplant clinics under the Tamil Nadu Clinical Establishments Act. This regulation, aligned with National Medical Commission guidelines from September 20, 2022, brings a largely unregulated sector under official oversight.
Under the new rules, aesthetics clinics cannot operate independently as non-medical entities and must obtain a license. Hair transplant clinics are now required to have proper operation theatre setups. Only qualified and registered dermatologists or plastic surgeons are permitted to perform aesthetic, cosmetology, and hair transplant procedures.
Furthermore, these centers must adhere to pre-procedure medical fitness tests and maintain essential emergency drugs and equipment. Experts have welcomed the move, stating it is crucial for curbing quackery and addressing the rising number of botched procedures, some of which have had fatal consequences due to unqualified individuals performing them.
Previously, NMC guidelines existed but lacked enforceability. This government order is expected to significantly improve standards and patient safety within Tamil Nadu's cosmetic treatment sector.
