Tamil Nadu is set to implement a new Public Health Act, replacing the 1939 version to address contemporary health issues. This legislation includes a provision that could make home births outside of medical facilities a punishable offense. The state also plans to introduce a 'Positive Health Policy' and a 'Nalam 360' mobile application.
The 'Nalam 360' initiative will provide comprehensive, free annual health check-ups for all citizens aged 30 and above, encompassing 14 basic tests. This program is allocated an initial budget of ₹51 crore.
Furthering healthcare access, an Integrated Mental Health Plan with an outlay of ₹26.87 crore will be rolled out across 12 districts. This scheme focuses on establishing mental health units, school counseling services, tele-mental health hubs, and substance abuse rehabilitation centers.
A significant development is the establishment of TN MediCity, aimed at enhancing medical tourism and delivering integrated healthcare, with an initial ₹10 crore investment. Additionally, 284 new super-specialty medical positions will be created to ensure advanced care is available in all districts.
The Chief Minister's Elderly Insurance Scheme is designed to offer free treatment to approximately 38 lakh senior citizens aged over 70, irrespective of their income. To bolster the healthcare workforce, around 2,500 new nurses will be appointed, and 1,695 additional roles created.
