Tamil Nadu to Launch Stem Cell Registry for Transplants

Tamil Nadu is preparing to establish a dedicated stem cell and bone marrow registry to improve bone marrow transplantation services. This critical initiative aims to address the growing demand, with 50 patients currently awaiting transplants, primarily children suffering from leukemias and aplastic anemia. The Health Minister emphasized the need for greater public awareness and participation in donation, comparing the registry to existing eye and blood donation efforts.

Bone marrow transplantation procedures are fully covered by the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, a significant relief for patients. The scheme also extends coverage to post-transplantation expenses. The public can register for the registry at 36 government medical college hospitals across the state. Collected samples will be sent to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Chennai for necessary testing.

In addition to the registry, the state has rolled out NalamAI, a WhatsApp Chatbot service for outpatient registration in 22 districts. The facility to book outpatient appointments has also been expanded to all 32 departments at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), aiming to reduce patient waiting times. The Minister also inaugurated upgraded facilities at RGGGH, including a modern central diet kitchen and a cath lab, costing ₹15.73 crore.
