Tamil Nadu Declares 2,390 Panchayats TB-Free

Tamil Nadu is actively pursuing its goal of becoming a tuberculosis-free state. In 2025, a significant milestone was achieved with 2,390 village panchayats being officially recognized as "TB-free panchayats." This achievement is part of the state's ongoing efforts under the National TB Elimination Programme.

Between January and June of 2026, the state diagnosed 48,469 individuals with TB and initiated their treatment. This follows a successful 2025, during which 93,203 people received necessary TB treatment. Health Minister K.G. Arunraj recently led a district-wise review of these anti-TB measures.

The Health Minister stressed the importance of a "TB-free India movement," highlighting that coordinated efforts involving government and private healthcare providers, elected officials, NGOs, and various government departments are essential for TB eradication. He urged enhanced screening in high-risk areas using modern diagnostic tools for early detection and prompt treatment.

Deputy directors of TB control have been directed to intensify screening for high-risk individuals, ensure widespread access to advanced diagnostic testing, provide specialized care for severe TB cases, and offer preventive treatment to close contacts of TB patients. The minister reiterated that with the collective participation of all societal segments, the objective of a TB-free Tamil Nadu can be readily attained.
