Tamiflu Cuts Kids' Flu ICU Risk
12 Aug
Summary
- Prompt Tamiflu treatment reduces children's ICU risk by 31%.
- Treatment benefits persist even when started after two days.
- Antiviral use in hospitalized children has declined recently.
Children hospitalized with the flu who receive prompt treatment with Tamiflu face a significantly reduced risk of requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. A recent study revealed that initiating oseltamivir treatment as early as possible decreased the risk of ICU care by 31% for pediatric patients.
These findings are particularly relevant given a recent decline in antiviral medication use among hospitalized children, despite national guidelines recommending their use. The study analyzed over 7,000 severe flu hospitalizations in children across 13 states over eight influenza seasons, accounting for symptom onset and treatment initiation times.
Researchers emphasized that the benefits of Tamiflu treatment were significant regardless of when it was started relative to symptom onset. Furthermore, children treated with Tamiflu were found to be 13% more likely to have a shorter hospital stay, reinforcing its value in managing severe pediatric influenza.
