Takeda has announced the availability of ORZEYFUL (oveporexton) in Japan and China for narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). This groundbreaking medication is the first therapy in its class, functioning as an orexin receptor 2 agonist to address the orexin deficiency characteristic of NT1. It is presented in a convenient tablet form.
ORZEYFUL represents a significant advancement by targeting the root cause of NT1, a chronic neurological condition causing excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. Previous treatments primarily managed symptoms, but ORZEYFUL aims to restore orexin signaling. This approach is supported by Phase 3 studies which confirmed its efficacy.
Clinical trials revealed that ORZEYFUL notably improved the full spectrum of NT1 symptoms and enhanced patients' quality of life compared to a placebo. These statistically significant improvements, observed early and sustained over 12 weeks, included enhanced wakefulness and reduced sleepiness and cataplexy. The drug was generally well-tolerated, with common side effects like insomnia and urinary urgency.
Takeda, a leader in orexin science, also has other orexin agonists in development for various sleep-wake disorders. The company is committed to advancing treatments for rare diseases, neuroscience, and other core therapeutic areas, striving to create better health outcomes globally.
