Baby Formula Tainted: Third Death Investigated
11 Feb
Summary
- A third baby death is being investigated due to tainted infant formula.
- Formula contamination stems from a toxin linked to arachidonic acid oil.
- Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis have recalled products amid the crisis.

French authorities are currently investigating a third infant death possibly associated with tainted baby formula. This investigation is part of a broader inquiry into contaminated products that has ensnared major manufacturers. Previously, separate probes were initiated into two other infant deaths in recent weeks.
The crisis emerged due to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin traced to contaminated arachidonic acid oil, which is frequently added to infant formulas. Companies such as Nestlé, Danone, and Groupe Lactalis have issued product recalls across several countries following recommendations for lower toxin levels.
While no company has definitively identified the contamination source, it has been traced to China's Cabio Biotech Wuhan Co. In separate incidents, 14 babies suspected of consuming the recalled formula were hospitalized but subsequently discharged, with no causal link to cereulide established.
