Boehringer's Survodutide Shows Promise in Weight Loss
29 Apr
Summary
- Survodutide led to 16.6% average weight loss in a trial.
- The drug targets dual glucagon/GLP-1 receptors.
- Full trial data to be presented at ADA's 2026 Scientific Sessions.

Boehringer Ingelheim's investigational drug, survodutide, has shown notable efficacy in a Phase III trial, meeting its primary endpoints for weight loss. Adults with obesity or overweight experienced an average weight reduction of up to 16.6% over 76 weeks, compared to 3.2% in the placebo group.
The SYNCHRONIZE-1 trial also indicated that the weight loss was primarily fat mass reduction, preserving lean body mass. A key secondary endpoint showed a significant decrease in waist circumference, a marker for visceral fat and cardiometabolic risk.
While not directly compared, survodutide's weight loss efficacy appears comparable to Wegovy (semaglutide) but trails behind Zepbound (tirzepatide) based on published trial data. Full trial findings are scheduled for presentation at the American Diabetes Association's 2024 Scientific Sessions in June.
As a dual agonist, survodutide aims to address obesity while potentially supporting liver function, a crucial aspect of metabolic health. Boehringer Ingelheim is exploring other weight-loss therapies, including a triple receptor agonist peptide and oral options, anticipating substantial growth in the GLP-1 receptor agonist market.
