Surrey Cancer Ward Gets Major Boost
21 Apr
Summary
- Chemotherapy ward adds six chairs, increasing capacity by 20%
- Expansion aims to treat over 90% of patients within two weeks
- New facility set to open by 2030, boosting regional cancer care
B.C. Cancer's Surrey chemotherapy ward, the second busiest in the province, is set to significantly enhance its services with the addition of six new treatment chairs. This expansion increases the total number of chairs to 39, representing a 20 per cent boost in patient capacity.
This vital expansion is projected to accommodate an additional 420 treatments each month. It is accompanied by supplementary staffing, reflecting a commitment to reducing patient wait times. B.C. Cancer aims to treat over 90 per cent of patients within two weeks of their cancer diagnosis.
The expansion is a response to the steadily increasing demand for chemotherapy services in Surrey, where over 10,000 new cancer diagnoses occur annually. The $1.4 million cost was covered by donations.
Looking ahead, a new cancer centre and hospital is under construction in Cloverdale, within the Fraser Health region. This facility is expected to be operational by 2030 and will significantly increase outpatient oncology care, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy visit capacities.
