Hats Off to Safety: Name Badges Revolutionize ORs
27 May
Summary
- Surgical hats with name badges improve patient identification and comfort.
- Badges enhance communication and safety in operating theatres.
- Initiative aims to humanize medical staff and reduce patient anxiety.

Surgical staff at Musgrove Hospital are now wearing hats adorned with name badges, a move designed to improve identification for both patients and the operating team. This initiative has also been implemented in the maternity unit at Great Western Hospital and is planned for wider adoption across Somerset NHS Trust's operating theatres.
Denis Gower, a patient who recently had extensive spinal surgery, shared that being able to identify staff members by name on their hats was a significant comfort. He stated it made the medical professionals seem more human and relatable, contributing to a feeling of reassurance during a critical procedure.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Andy Stevenson highlighted the benefits for patient safety and team communication. He explained that hearing one's name spoken can foster a heightened state of attentiveness among staff, a phenomenon known as the 'cocktail room effect', leading to improved focus and care.
