A locum consultant general and colorectal surgeon, Dr. Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, has been permanently removed from the medical register following a near-fatal surgical error. While performing emergency bowel surgery on August 25, 2020, at the Royal Oldham Hospital, Dr. Abdel Rahman mistakenly joined the patient's small intestine to the stomach.
This "totally unconventional operation" created a "closed loop" in the patient's digestive system, leading to uncontrollable pain and vomiting, with no bowel movement for three weeks. Despite the patient's critical condition, Dr. Abdel Rahman assured the family the surgery was a success.
Another surgeon intervened on September 15, 2020, to correct the "major surgical error." Experts described the procedure as "at the extreme end of surgical error" and "as bad as it gets," noting it would have led to the patient's death if uncorrected.
Dr. Abdel Rahman denied responsibility, alleging a "witch hunt" and claiming an unblemished record. The tribunal found no evidence of remorse and concluded his fitness to practice was impaired by misconduct. He also faced disciplinary action for failing to comply with GMC conditions and for lying about a role in Ireland.
