Surgeon Accused in Patient Death Faces Council Inquiry
3 Apr
Summary
- A surgeon is prima facie guilty of negligence leading to a patient's death.
- A 42-year-old man died after alleged delayed and faulty surgery.
- The patient's family claims a punctured intestine caused the fatality.

The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has determined that surgeon Sarfaraz Jajil Baig is prima facie guilty of medical negligence. This finding follows the death of Aman Chopra, a 42-year-old man, who was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic on February 2, 2024, for acute abdominal pain.
Chopra's family alleges that his appendicitis surgery was delayed by two days. His condition worsened post-surgery, requiring a transfer to the ICU and a second operation. His wife reported that doctors in Hyderabad later stated his intestine had been punctured during the Kolkata surgery, leading to his death.
The WBMC has formally charged Baig with "infamous conduct in a profession" and has given him three weeks to reply. Baig stated he had not yet received a copy of the council's order.
