Supreme Court Mandates National Organ Transplant Policy

The Supreme Court of India has mandated the Centre to develop a national policy and uniform rules for organ donation and allocation in consultation with the States. This directive aims to establish a transparent and efficient system, addressing concerns raised by the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation.
The court specifically called for the policy to include model allocation criteria, tackling gender and caste biases and implementing uniform donor criteria nationwide. States that have not yet adopted the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Rules, 2014, were urged to do so promptly.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court directed the government to evolve guidelines for the welfare and protection of live organ donors from exploitation. Amendments to birth and death registration forms were also ordered to specifically indicate 'brain death' and organ donation options provided to families.
