Super Flu Variant Strikes Aussies: Deaths Double!
26 Mar
Summary
- More than 60 people died from flu in January, double the usual number.
- The Super-K flu variant is highly contagious and vaccine-resistant.
- Updated flu vaccines are now available and recommended for all ages.

Australia is facing a significant public health warning due to a highly contagious flu variant, known as Subclade K or Super-K. This strain, circulating since September, has led to a devastating increase in fatalities, with over 60 deaths reported in January alone—double the typical figure for that month. Low vaccination rates have exacerbated the spread of this vaccine-resistant variant.
As of March 26, 2026, health authorities are urging citizens to get vaccinated with the updated flu shot. Over 220,000 Australians have been infected this year, highlighting the urgent need for protection. Queensland has recorded 7,295 cases, with free vaccinations available for individuals six months and older at local GPs and pharmacies.
Special attention is being given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, children, and pregnant women. A new needle-free intranasal vaccine is also available for young children aged two to five, offering robust protection. It is safe to receive both the flu and COVID-19 booster vaccines simultaneously.
