- New facility replaces outdated Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
- Hospital opens its doors in July with advanced features.

The construction of the Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital has seen its estimated cost inflate by £14 million, bringing the total to £50 million. Initially planned in 2021 with a £36 million budget, the project's expenses surged due to post-pandemic inflation and rising interest rates. The NHS trust secured funding through a loan agreement, which will be fully repaid.
The new hospital is set to open its doors in July, replacing the Sunderland Eye Infirmary, which is no longer deemed fit for purpose. The eye emergency department is scheduled to begin operations on July 11, 2026, with all remaining services expected to be available by July 23, 2026. The facility boasts enhanced features such as a dedicated A&E waiting area for children and an expanded Cataract Treatment Centre.
