3 Feb
Summary
- A 21-year-old medical student survived a critical brain bleed.
- Doctors performed complex neuro-interventional and surgical procedures.
- The advanced treatment was free under a government health scheme.

A remarkable recovery has been made by a 21-year-old third-year medical student from Thiruvarur Medical College. She faced a life-threatening brain bleed due to a ruptured arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain.
Doctors at Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital performed intricate neuro-interventional and neurosurgical procedures. Initially, a minimally invasive procedure blocked abnormal blood flow. This was followed by emergency decompressive craniectomy to manage dangerously high intracranial pressure.
After 21 days on a ventilator, the student has regained consciousness and is speaking and walking with support. She is expected to return to college soon, with a follow-up surgery planned in three months to replace the removed portion of her skull.
The advanced treatment, valued at approximately 15 lakh in private care, was provided at no cost to the patient through the Chief Minister's health insurance scheme, highlighting accessible healthcare for students.
