In August 2022, Alli Bate experienced a sudden, severe migraine while out for dinner, an event that preceded a life-altering haemorrhagic stroke. She woke up in hospital 20 hours later to find herself completely paralysed on her left side and unable to speak.
Doctors informed Alli, then 38, that she had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke and faced a mere 5% chance of survival. This terrifying diagnosis led her to contemplate assisted dying due to the profound loss of independence and the fear of living 'trapped in her body'.
Supported by her partner, Olivia, Alli began intensive physiotherapy. Despite regaining some independence, including driving and returning to work as a counsellor, she still requires assistance with daily tasks and dreams of fully regaining her autonomy and life.
