21 Mar
Summary
- A mobile app supports stroke survivors and caregivers at home.
- The app provides instructional videos and modules for caregivers.
- It aims to reduce healthcare burden and improve survivor quality of life.

A new mobile application, 'Stroke Home Care' (SHC), has been developed by researchers at PGI, Chandigarh, to enhance post-stroke rehabilitation in India. This web-based educational platform provides caregivers with structured guidance, including instructional videos and practical modules, to manage common post-stroke complications. The initiative, published in the Journal of Neurosciences in Rural Practice, aims to bridge the gap in access to rehabilitation services, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
The SHC app was developed after screening 170 stroke survivors and their caregivers to identify rehabilitation needs. Feasibility testing among 30 patient-caregiver pairs indicated high satisfaction with the app's usability and content. A panel of 20 stroke experts validated the app's appropriateness, commending its clarity and ease of navigation.
Researchers believe the app can significantly reduce the strain on healthcare facilities by equipping caregivers with early intervention knowledge. While acknowledging limitations such as language availability and focus on severely disabled patients, the innovation is seen as promising for neurorehabilitation. Larger trials are proposed to evaluate its effectiveness and integration into standard care protocols.
