Hospitals Must Master Bio-Waste Rules Now
1 Mar
Summary
- Hospitals must strictly follow biomedical waste norms.
- Waste segregation uses four color-coded categories.
- Geo-tagging and barcode systems will track waste.

District Collector Sumit Kumar has emphasized the critical importance of minimizing the public health and environmental risks associated with biomedical waste. He instructed hospitals to rigorously implement waste management regulations.
During a review meeting, officials were directed to streamline the collection, segregation, and scientific disposal of all biomedical waste generated by government and private healthcare facilities. This includes waste such as blood and placenta.
Kumar reiterated that waste must be meticulously segregated into four specified color-coded categories: yellow, red, white translucent, and blue, as per prescribed rules. He cautioned that non-compliance would result in penalties. Hospital managements are now required to submit bi-monthly compliance reports and assume full accountability for safe disposal processes.
Furthermore, the Collector ordered the implementation of geo-tagging and barcode systems to enable precise tracking of waste from its origin to its final destination at the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility. This measure aims to ensure efficient collection and transportation. A comprehensive review meeting is scheduled for March 28 to assess progress.
