Dr. Kimberly Bussey from Midwestern University explained that in cancer patients, cortisol levels remain persistently high throughout the day, unlike in healthy individuals where they fluctuate. This sustained high cortisol allows cancer cells to increase their adaptability, making them more robust, harder to treat, and more prone to spreading to other tissues. These changes in cancer cells are believed to be permanent, even if stress levels decrease later.
Experts advise cancer patients to actively manage stress through various lifestyle choices. Recommended practices include engaging in mindfulness activities like meditation or journaling, regular exercise, spending time in nature, maintaining a healthy diet, and ensuring adequate sleep. These habits can foster a more resilient mental state and improve sleep quality, crucial for managing daily stressors and promoting overall well-being. Some medical institutions now integrate counseling and support groups into cancer treatment plans, acknowledging the profound impact of stress on patient outcomes.
