Strength Training Sparks Fat Cell Changes in Weeks
9 Oct
Summary
- Strength training altered fat cell size and burning processes.
- Changes occurred within seven sessions in obese mice.
- Biological shifts began before any visible weight loss.
Researchers have discovered that strength training may influence fat metabolism significantly sooner than previously thought. A recent study, published in Life Sciences, demonstrated that even a short period of resistance exercise prompted changes in fat tissue.
Scientists at Brazil's State University of Campinas studied obese mice, feeding them a high-fat diet for 14 weeks. One group then underwent seven days of strength training, involving staircase climbs with weights, while the control group remained sedentary.
Remarkably, the trained mice showed reduced visceral fat and smaller fat cells compared to the sedentary group. These effects emerged without any change in their total body weight, indicating exercise's early impact on fat tissue.
This research highlights that strength training can activate lipolysis, the process of breaking down stored fat for energy. Proteins involved in fat mobilization showed increased activity, while genes related to fat storage were downregulated.
While these findings occurred in mice and do not equate to a quick fix for human belly fat loss, they suggest that internal metabolic improvements can commence within a week. This provides a metabolic rationale for continuing exercise even before visible results manifest.
