Stray dogs are a persistent presence within the Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, a significant government-run facility in Delhi. The animals have been sighted not only in general hospital areas but also in close proximity to the kitchen and the trolleys used for patient food delivery. This situation raises serious hygiene and safety concerns for patients and staff.
The hospital's medical director, Dr. Vinod Kumar, has stated that repeated requests have been made to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the removal of these stray animals. He acknowledged that while attempts are made to capture them weekly, the sheer number of animals and the hospital's open access make complete eradication challenging. Dr. Kumar also emphasized the need for public awareness to discourage feeding the stray dogs on hospital premises.
The presence of dogs in areas where patients receive treatment, including rabies injections, is particularly alarming. Despite concerns, some hospital staff have reportedly downplayed the issue, referring to the dogs as almost like pets. However, with thousands of people visiting daily, the risk of incidents cannot be ignored.
