New Stent Therapy Eases Post-DVT Pain
14 Apr
Summary
- Stents open damaged veins, reducing post-thrombotic syndrome severity.
- Study showed 40% stent group had severe symptoms vs. 61% standard care.
- Stented patients reported significantly higher quality of life scores.
A novel treatment approach, utilizing stents to open and strengthen damaged veins, is showing promise in alleviating the painful aftereffects of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Post-thrombotic syndrome, a complication that can occur within two years of a DVT event, often causes chronic leg pain, swelling, and impaired mobility.
Researchers reported on April 13, 2026, that this stent therapy, mirroring techniques used for heart attack treatment, significantly reduced the severity of symptoms associated with post-thrombotic syndrome. A study involving 225 patients found that six months after the procedure, only 40% of those who received a stent still experienced severe symptoms, compared to 61% in the group receiving standard care.
Beyond symptom reduction, patients who underwent stenting also reported a substantial improvement in their overall quality of life. This development offers a more effective and durable treatment option for individuals suffering from the long-term consequences of DVT, addressing vein damage that current treatments do not resolve.
The findings, presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology's annual meeting in Toronto, Canada, suggest a powerful new tool for clinicians managing this challenging condition.
