18 Jun
Summary
- A statewide campaign against diarrheal diseases began June 16.
- Shigellosis outbreak in four districts triggers special measures.
- Campaign focuses on hygiene, water safety, and public awareness.

The Health department has initiated a statewide campaign against diarrheal diseases, running from June 16 to July 31, under the slogan "Prevent diarrhoeal diseases, save lives." This action follows a rise in water-borne diseases, particularly shigellosis, which has led to child fatalities during the current rainy season.
The campaign emphasizes prevention through community awareness and behavioral changes, as directed by the Union Health Ministry. Shigellosis cases continue to be reported across multiple districts. The Health department has declared ongoing outbreaks in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Thrissur, and Alappuzha districts.
To combat the spread, awareness activities, hygiene promotion, and preventive measures will be intensified. Key interventions include promoting breastfeeding, ensuring safe drinking water, scientific waste management, and proper handwashing. The campaign also educates the public on hygiene practices related to children and food preparation.
