Srinagar Hospital Probes Child's Death Amid Negligence Allegations

In a tragic incident last month, the authorities at the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar have launched a probe into the death of a child. This action comes after the parents of the 18-month-old child alleged negligence by the doctors in treating their son.
The medical superintendent of SKIMS has stated that a committee has been constituted to investigate the case, and a report is expected in the next day or two. The incident came to light after the child's mother, Sumaira, shared her ordeal on social media.
According to Sumaira, her son Ahmad Nayeem had a high fever of 101 degrees on the night of October 17th. The family first took him to a private hospital the next morning, from where they had to shift him to the emergency room at SKIMS. At the paediatric ER, they found only one doctor available, and the nurse was nowhere to be seen.
The doctor on duty told the parents that the child just needed oral rehydration solution (ORS) due to some dehydration. However, the child's condition continued to worsen, and his oxygen level dropped to a critical 64. Despite the parents' pleas, the doctor initially dismissed their concerns, saying the child would be fine. It was only when a senior doctor arrived that the family was rushed to the NICU, where the child was declared dead within 20 minutes, as the oxygen level was not reaching his brain.
The tragic incident has now prompted a thorough investigation by the SKIMS authorities to determine the exact cause of the child's death and any potential lapses in the medical care provided.
