Summer Sperm: Quality Peaks in Warmer Months
25 Feb
Summary
- Sperm motility highest in June and July, study shows.
- Seasonal patterns affect fertility treatments positively.
- Sperm concentration unchanged by seasons, study confirms.

A recent study indicates that sperm quality exhibits distinct seasonal variations, with the highest motility observed in June and July. This pattern persisted even in warmer climates like Florida, suggesting factors beyond ambient temperature influence sperm health.
The research, involving over 15,500 men aged 18-45 from Denmark and Florida, found that sperm motility – its swimming ability – consistently peaked in the summer months. Conversely, motility was lowest in December and January.
Crucially, the study highlighted that seasonal changes did not affect sperm concentration or ejaculate volume. This means the quantity of sperm produced remains constant year-round, while its effectiveness in movement is subject to seasonal influences.
These findings are significant for fertility treatments. Optimizing the timing of treatments and testing based on these seasonal patterns could provide better guidance for couples seeking to conceive. The optimal temperature for sperm storage is two to four degrees Celsius below average body temperature, and deviations can negatively impact motility.
