A significant advancement in regional cancer care has been announced with the opening of a stem cell transplant program at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. This new service is set to serve patients in South Jersey suffering from various cancers and blood disorders, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
Previously, patients requiring stem cell transplants had to travel out of the region. The new program offers autologous transplants, where a patient's own healthy stem cells are used to replace damaged bone marrow, restoring normal blood cell production. This initiative represents a major milestone for cancer treatment accessibility in South Jersey.
Beyond standard transplants, the program provides access to innovative therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy and is the first in the South Jersey-Philadelphia area to offer tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy for advanced melanoma. The establishment of this program, planned since August 2023, signifies a commitment to enhanced patient outcomes and cutting-edge oncology services.
