SC Measles Outbreak Accelerates: Hundreds Quarantined
11 Dec
Summary
- South Carolina measles cases are accelerating, with 111 reported.
- Low vaccination rates contribute to the rapid spread of measles.
- 254 individuals are under a three-week quarantine due to exposure.

A measles outbreak in upstate South Carolina is rapidly accelerating, prompting health officials to place hundreds under quarantine. As of Wednesday, 111 cases have been confirmed in the region, with a significant increase reported since Friday. State epidemiologists anticipate the transmission will continue for several more weeks.
Low vaccination rates, particularly in Spartanburg and Greenville counties where MMR coverage hovers around 90%, are a key factor fueling the spread. Despite efforts to offer mobile vaccination clinics, community uptake has been minimal. Measles is highly contagious, capable of remaining airborne for hours.
The widespread transmission is affecting schools and a church, leading to 254 individuals being quarantined for three weeks. This situation reflects a broader national concern, with the CDC reporting over 1,900 measles cases nationwide in 2025, predominantly among unvaccinated children.
