Sight Restored: Free Surgeries End Years of Waiting
4 Apr
Summary
- 133 patients regained sight through free cataract surgeries.
- Some patients waited since 2019 for the simple procedure.
- Surgical marathons aim to eliminate significant backlogs.

Gladys Khoza, 84, joyfully had her vision restored, ending years of difficulty seeing her family. She was among 133 individuals who received free cataract surgeries over two weekends last month at two South African hospitals. Patients on public health waiting lists, some since 2019, finally received the 15-20 minute procedure, which replaces the eye's clouded lens.
These "surgical marathons" are a key initiative to combat extensive backlogs in South Africa's public healthcare system, where resources often prioritize emergency cases. This public-private partnership, initially launched on Mandela Day in 2023, now occurs multiple times annually to increase access to essential care. Cataracts, a leading cause of curable blindness, affect nearly 100 million people globally, with a significant portion needing surgery.
Dr. Tebogo Fakude highlighted the profound impact of restored sight, noting it alleviates depression and the feeling of being a burden. The South African Health Department aims to eradicate backlogs through these events, which have previously addressed other medical issues. The recent focus on cataracts addresses an estimated backlog of over 240,000 people awaiting operations in the country.
