- Her son Patrick faced chronic kidney disease and dialysis at 19.
- A transplant less than three months after diagnosis marked a turning point.
A Sudbury mother is bringing her son's kidney transplant journey to the stage to raise awareness for organ donation. She will present at Northern MedTalks, an event fostering discussions on medicine and care.
Her son, Patrick, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and eventually needed dialysis at age 19. Fortunately, a donor kidney was found in less than three months, significantly improving his health.
Patrick, now 21, has regained much of his independence and can enjoy activities like fishing and hunting, though he still requires daily medication.
The presentation, a collaboration with a science communication graduate student, aims to share Patrick's story and educate the audience about organ donation, addressing common myths and misconceptions.
Northern MedTalks, a partnership including Health Sciences North and Laurentian University, seeks to connect the community and provide accessible information on health topics.
