Snoring? It Could Be Sleep Apnea!
14 Mar
Summary
- Persistent snoring is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.
- Untreated sleep apnea increases risks of heart disease and stroke.
- New clinic at SSG Hospital aims to improve diagnosis and treatment.

Snoring, often dismissed as a sign of deep sleep, can actually be an indicator of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a potentially serious condition. This disorder causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep due to airway blockage, reducing vital oxygen supply to the body and brain.
If left untreated, OSA is linked to significant health complications, including a higher prevalence of heart failure, increased risk of stroke, and irregular heart rhythms. It is also closely associated with metabolic disorders like Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. The excessive daytime sleepiness caused by OSA can also elevate the risk of accidents.
To address this growing concern, Sir Sayajirao General Hospital in Vadodara has established a dedicated clinic for OSA. The hospital has also acquired a new polysomnography machine to facilitate advanced sleep studies, aiming for more accurate diagnoses and effective treatment strategies. A weekly clinic is now operational to serve patients experiencing snoring and sleep apnea symptoms.
