Summary
- Smartwatch app accurately detects nearly all major epileptic seizures.
- App alerts caregivers, potentially reducing risk of sudden death.
- Device offers a stigma-free, reliable tool for epilepsy management.
A groundbreaking smartwatch application, EpiWatch, has shown exceptional ability to accurately detect major epileptic seizures. Researchers reported that the app successfully identified 46 out of 47 tonic-clonic seizures, also known as grand mal seizures, during a recent study.
This innovation holds significant promise for individuals experiencing uncontrolled tonic-clonic seizures, a condition that carries a heightened risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), especially for those who sleep alone. The EpiWatch app can alert caregivers promptly.
Unlike some seizure-monitoring devices that may carry a stigma, the EpiWatch app is integrated into a common smartwatch, making it more likely for users to embrace regular use. The study, which involved 242 participants with epilepsy, found that the app had a lower rate of false alarms compared to other devices.
This development could encourage long-term use and provide dependable alerts, contributing to a reduction in sudden deaths and other serious risks associated with tonic-clonic seizures. The study was funded by EpiWatch Inc., the app's developer.
