Tragedy has struck four Baiga tribe-dominated villages in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, where six children have died and 101 others have fallen ill in the past month. The children, aged between one and 13, exhibited symptoms such as high fever, rashes, red spots, stomach ache, and ulcers since July.
Officials confirmed the children succumbed to multiple infections, and their blood samples have been dispatched to the ICMR-National Institute of Research in Bacterial Infections in Kolkata and the ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune for detailed analysis. The district administration has responded by setting up temporary health camps in Adori, Kundeksa, Bondari, and Korka villages.
While the health department points to initial reliance on faith healing and rituals by villagers, community leaders express concerns over delayed action and inadequate health facilities. A team from Jabalpur Medical College is currently investigating the outbreak, and acute nutritional deficiencies have also been noted among the affected children. A comprehensive report has been submitted to the state health department in Bhopal.
