Break Up Sitting: Light Movement Slashes Cancer Death Risk
5 Jul
Summary
- Extended sitting over 30 minutes daily linked to increased cancer death risk.
- Each hour of continuous inactivity raises cancer risk by 10%.
- Light physical activity can significantly reduce cancer mortality risk.
New findings suggest that sitting or reclining for extended periods, specifically more than 30 minutes at a time, is associated with a heightened risk of cancer-related death. This analysis, which followed over 91,000 individuals for approximately 12 years using data from wearable devices, revealed a concerning trend.
For each continuous hour spent sedentary, the risk of dying from cancer appears to increase by 10%. The study, published on July 2nd in PLOS Medicine, highlights that the accumulation and duration of inactivity are crucial factors, not just the total time spent sitting.
However, the research offers a hopeful outlook: interrupting sedentary blocks with movement can reduce these risks. Replacing one hour of sitting with light physical activity daily was linked to a 12% lower cancer death risk. Even moderate or vigorous bursts of activity provided significant reductions.
Lead author Dr. Frederick Ho emphasized that light movement, often overlooked in current health guidelines favoring moderate to vigorous exercise, plays a protective role. Future research aims to tailor personalized strategies for individuals to effectively break up prolonged periods of inactivity.
