Sirkazhi Anganwadi Services Halted, Children Face Malnutrition
18 Jan
Summary
- 110 families in Sirkazhi have been denied Anganwadi services for months.
- Children exhibit visible signs of undernutrition; families struggle economically.
- Local authorities have failed to address repeated petitions for aid.

More than 100 Scheduled Tribe families in Sirkazhi taluk have been without crucial anganwadi services for several months, leading to serious concerns about malnutrition among vulnerable groups. The affected settlement, J.J. Nagar, is home to 110 families whose children and pregnant women are missing out on vital support. Residents report that all services stopped in March 2025, following an incident near the anganwadi, and appeals to authorities have gone unanswered.
The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme typically provides supplementary nutrition, take-home rations, pre-school education, and health monitoring. However, these benefits have been completely withdrawn for the families in J.J. Nagar. This cessation of aid has intensified the community's economic hardships, with many families dependent on irregular daily wages and struggling to afford nutritious food for their children, who now display visible signs of undernutrition.
