Singapore Seniors: Healthier SG Lacking Daily Impact
19 Nov
Summary
- Many wellness services underutilized despite Healthier SG support.
- Seniors need supportive environments for consistent healthy choices.
- Continuity of care challenged as seniors seek multiple doctors.

A recent study by Singapore Management University's Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) indicates a significant gap between Singapore's proactive health policies and their everyday adoption by older adults. While over 90% of seniors support the Healthier SG initiative, many wellness services remain underutilized, and consistent primary care physician reliance is low. This presents a challenge as Singapore approaches becoming a super-aged society.
The research, based on data from 7,056 participants aged 53-80, found that referrals to allied-health professionals and community wellness programs are particularly underused. Furthermore, while screening and medication review services see some engagement, a substantial number of seniors prefer seeking second opinions or specialized care from multiple doctors, impacting continuity of care.
ROSA emphasizes that healthy ageing requires more than just access to medical services; it necessitates building environments and routines that integrate well-being into daily life. As Singapore braces for a future where one in four residents will be 65 or older by 2030, fostering proactive health behaviors through community and environmental support is crucial.
