Sindh Tackles Stray Dog Crisis with New Plan

Facing a significant increase in dog bite incidents, the Sindh government has committed to a new strategy for controlling the stray dog population. This plan, developed in collaboration with Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs), prioritizes neutering, vaccination, and tagging of stray dogs.
The approach emphasizes international guidelines and WHO recommendations, shifting from conventional culling methods to Animal Birth Control (ABC). This aims to provide a more humane and effective long-term solution.
Deputy Commissioner South reported that coordination with three NGOs has commenced, with neutralization efforts already underway in District South. Crucially, three major Dog Bite Centres in Karachi – at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Lyari General Hospital, and Civil Hospital Karachi – are fully equipped and staffed for 24/7 treatment and anti-rabies vaccine provision.
Additionally, 12 dispensaries in District South offer immediate first-aid and vaccinations. Similar campaigns and the establishment of dedicated animal birth control centers are being implemented in other districts. The commissioner stressed the importance of uninterrupted vaccine supply and directed all deputy commissioners to report on preventive measures weekly.
