Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has urged citizens to seek immediate medical care after any dog bite or scratch, emphasizing that even seemingly minor wounds require prompt attention. He advised thorough wound washing with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, followed by a visit to the nearest health facility for treatment and vaccination.
Rabies is potentially fatal once symptoms manifest, making timely intervention crucial. To combat this, 278 anti-rabies units throughout Sindh have been upgraded. These facilities are now equipped with essential vaccine supplies, adequate wound-washing stations, and trained medical personnel to ensure timely patient care.
The provincial government's efforts have led to an estimated 30% increase in the capacity to treat dog-bite patients compared to the previous year. Health facilities have treated approximately 45,000 patients, administered around 138,000 doses of rabies vaccine, and provided nearly 5,000 doses of rabies immunoglobulin where necessary.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon affirmed that the Sindh government is leveraging all resources to prevent rabies, implementing a comprehensive strategy and ensuring vaccine availability across all government hospitals and rural health centers. Public awareness, prompt medical attention post-bite, and dog vaccination are deemed vital for rabies prevention.
