Sindh has dramatically reduced its polio burden, reporting only one case in 2026 compared to 23 in 2024. This progress was highlighted in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on September 17, 2026. The Chief Minister stressed the commitment to eradicating polio and called for intensified vaccination and surveillance efforts.
Despite the decline in clinical cases, environmental surveillance indicates the virus still circulates in certain high-risk zones, notably five sites in Karachi. Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho reported that Pakistan's total wild poliovirus cases have also sharply decreased. Preparations are underway for the Sub-National Immunisation Days (SNIDs) campaign from September 21-27.
This upcoming campaign aims to vaccinate nearly 10 million children under five across Sindh. Over 80,000 frontline workers will participate, with enhanced security and increased incentives for workers. The Chief Minister urged district administrations to ensure zero tolerance for missed vaccinations and operational gaps, focusing on strengthening community trust and engagement.
